Sonora is the county seat of Tuolumne County. It is in the heart of California’s “Gold Country” and named after the miners from Sonora Mexico who settled in the city in 1848. It is known as the “Queen of the Southern Mines” and still holds onto its historic downtown charm while thriving as the commercial, government, and cultural center for the region. The city if accessible year-round and conveniently located near Yosemite National Park, Columbia, and Railtown State Historic Parks.
