Nicknamed the "Gateway to Recreation", the City of Waterford, with a population of 8,456, welcomes passing travelers through its municipality as they pursue activities at nearby places like Turlock Lake State Recreation area, New Melones Reservoir and Yosemite National Park. The city also offers their Concerts in the Park series held during the summer months where every Friday night consists of a different theme where music, vendors, food, and a half-time entertainment/demonstration revolve around a theme.

The city changed its name from Bakersville to Waterford in 1870 due to apparent mix-ups with the more-populated Bakersfield, California.

Waterford is known regionally for its unique Cup Tree on which approximately 2500 cups or mugs have been nailed or placed.
